How to PROPERLY apply false eyelashes and apply them like a PRO

Have you ever spent hours in front of the mirror trying to apply fake eyelashes, only to end up with them sticking out at strange angles, or—worse—fall off completely after a few hours? But with the right tools and skills, anybody can apply falsies like a PRO.

First, you’re going to need these essentials: Eyelash glue | Nail scissors | False eyelashes | Tweezers

Then you can start with our no-fuss, super-easy guide to applying false eyelashes:

Removing the lashes from the box

Hold them in the packet under your nose with the lashes facing outwards; this will identify the left and right lashes as they're not always marked. To remove always peel them from the outer edge, never from the inner corner. This is because if you bend one section of lashes on the outside it doesn't matter as it's more than likely you'll be trimming them off to fit your eyes anyway. If you bend or break the lash from the inner corner, it matters! Gently tease it out using your fingers or tweezers and rest the lashes back in the box.

Measuring-up the lashes

Rest the strip lash along your lash line to see whether you need to trim it to size. The strip should start where your natural bulk of eyelashes begin, if you start too close to the inner corner it will irritate your eyes. To mark where your strip lashes should end, go to the outer corner and count 2-4 lashes inwards. If you have them hanging over, it can pull the eyes down.

Trim to fit

One size does not fit all when it comes to falsies. Your lashes may need a little bit of trimming before you apply them. Hold your false eyelashes against your eyelid to see if they’re too wide for your eye. If they are, go ahead and trim them with a pair of scissors. The eyelash strip should follow your natural eyelashes and not overhang. If they’re too long, they create a droopy look that’s not attractive. You can even trim the individual lashes if you think they’re too long and unnatural looking. Remember, the lashes should be longer towards the outer corner of the eye and shorter towards the inner corner of the eye.

Shape your false eyelashes

Shaping your false lash strips prior to applying glue is important.Bend your falsies into the shape of C and hold for a few seconds. The lash strip must follow the natural contour of your upper eye lid to adhere properly and look natural. The last thing you want is for the edges to start lifting up.

Grab your applicator

You can use an eyelash applicator, a pair of tweezers or your fingers to apply false eyelashes. Choose the application technique that works best for you – you’ll instinctively find one works better for you and makes applying false eyelashes much easier. Just remember to be firm but gentle with the lashes—you don’t want to crush them. On the other hand, you also don’t want them to move when you’re applying glue.

Apply lash adhesive

Dot a thin layer of glue (straight from the adhesive applicator) along the vein of the lash, from corner to corner. Wait a few seconds for it to go tacky before application. If you want super long-lasting application do the 'double adhesive' technique by applying some dots of glue along your lash line as well as on the lashes.

Apply your lashes

Now here comes the tricky part: applying the lashes. Remember this isn’t a race, so take it slow. Use a magnifying mirror to see exactly where the lash strip needs to go. Bring the lash strip down from above and place on top of your natural lashes. This will get you as close as possible to your natural lash line.

Set your lashes in place

After the false lash strip is placed on top of your real lashes, use your fingertips or eyelash tweezers to gently grasp your false and real lashes. Gently press together to fully adhere. If the glue is still wet, you’ll have the flexibility to move the lash strip into the correct position. If things don’t work out the first time, you can always start over.

Creating some uplift:

If you want to create more uplift with your lashes, finish by gently pushing against the lashes at the edge of the inner lash line.

4 extra tips and tricks for false eyelashes

  • Try to find false eyelashes with an invisible strip. They’re usually lighter and more comfortable to wear.

  • When trimming your lash strips, start by trimming from the outside corner moving inwards.

  • If you plan on wearing the eyelashes more than once, avoid applying mascara. Mascara is a great way to blend your natural lashes with the falsies, but for repeat wear you may wish to avoid this step. Think of the overall look you are trying to achieve when you purchase the color of your lashes so you won’t need to wear mascara.

  • When it’s time to remove false eyelashes, don’t just pull them off as this can damage your natural lashes. I like to saturate a cotton puff with eye makeup remover and hold against my eye for a few seconds or dip a cotton swab into some makeup remover and gently rub along your lash line to help loosen the glue. Let the makeup remover to sit for a minute, and then gently remove the strip.
